Update at 9:05 p.m. ET. 3 Reported Dead In Tennessee

The Associated Press is reporting that at least three people were killed in eastern Tennessee after storms packing high winds tore roofs from buildings and flattened trees.

Two of the deaths were in Cumberland County, about 60 miles west of Knoxville, and the third in DeKalb County. The fatalities were confirmed by an emergency management official in Cumberland County and a National Weather Service spokeswoman.

Update at 4:30 p.m. ET. As Many As 10 Tornadoes And 170 MPH Winds:

The Weather Channel reports that "as many as 10 tornadoes touched down in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana Wednesday morning." And as for the twister that tore through Harrisburg, Ill., there's this stunning estimate:

    "The tornado that hit Harrisburg, IL early this morning has now been rated EF-4, with 170 mph winds."

Update at 3:15 p.m. ET. On The Death Toll:

The Associated Press now says at least nine people were killed by the storms. According to Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, who was just on CNN, there were three fatalities in his state. According to the AP and authorities now holding a press conference, six people died in Harrisburg, Ill. More than 100 people are said to have been injured.

Update at 12:19 p.m. ET. 'Entire Neighborhoods Destroyed':

Jennifer Fuller, of NPR member station WSIU, was in front of the Harrisburg Medical Center when she talked to our Newscast unit a short while ago.

She said that when she canvased the city, she saw "entire neighborhoods destroyed."

Jennifer said she saw some trees split in half next to piles of rubble that used to be homes.

"It's devastating for these people," she reported.hollister new york

She said because the severe storms — it is not yet confirmed if they spun tornadoes — moved through Harrisburg in the early morning, it's possible some people were asleep.

"It's ironic," she said, "that just this week the Illinois Emergency Management Agency was telling people to be ready for storm season in March and to have those weather radios handy."

Britisch-österreichisches Forscherteam entdeckte Zusammenhang zwischen Megalithkreis und sogenanntem Cursus Wien - In der näheren Umgebung des berühmten Steinkreises von Stonehenge in Südengland existierten bereits lange vor der heute sichtbaren Anlage jungsteinzeitliche Strukturen. Ein britisch-österreichisches Forscherteam untersuchte Monumente, die bereits etwa 500 Jahre vor der Errichtung der Steine entstanden sind. Mit Hilfe von magnetischen Analysemethoden und Bodenradar konnten die Wissenschafter zeigen, dass große Gruben genau dort ausgehoben wurden, wo - vom Steinkreis aus gesehen - die Sonne am Tag der Sommersonnenwende auf und unter geht. Bereits seit vergangenem Jahr arbeiten die Wissenschafter von der Universität Birmingham und dem Ludwig Boltzmann Institut für Archäologische Prospektion in Wien an der großflächigen Vermessung der Umgebung von Stonehenge, wie der Direktor des Boltzmann Instituts, Wolfgang Neubauer, erklärte. Die Forscher haben eine bereits bekannte, rund 1,5 Kilometer nördlich des Steinkreises gelegene noch ältere Struktur - den sogenannten Cursus - erstmals vollständig mit den magnetischen Methoden und Bodenradar vermessen. Überraschende Leere Bei dem Cursus handelt es sich um eine etwa 100 Meter breite und drei Kilometer lange Anlage, die mit einem Graben und einem Wall abgegrenzt war. Datiert wird ihre Entstehung auf etwa 500 Jahre vor der Errichtung des weltweit berühmten Monuments. Bei ihren aktuellen Untersuchungen waren die Wissenschafter von der Leere der Anlage überrascht, so Neubauer, denn außer zwei großen Gruben konnten keine größeren Strukturen gefunden werden. Diese Gruben seien so gebaut, dass darin vermutlich große hölzerne Strukturen - ähnlich den Monolithen - gestanden haben. Ihre besondere Lage deutet aber darauf hin, dass der Ort bereits vor der Errichtung der Steine mit großer Bedeutung aufgeladen war und auch in Verbindung mit dem Platz, wo sich heute der Steinkreis befindet, stand: Zwei gerade Linien zwischen dem sogenannten "Heel Stone" in Stonehenge und den beiden Gruben markieren genau die Orte von Sonnenauf- und -untergang am Tag der Sommersonnenwende. Verbindet man den Mittelpunkt zwischen den beiden Gruben mit dem Zentrum von Stonehenge, zeigt diese Linie genau zum höchsten Sonnenstand an diesem Tag also exakt nach Süden. Vorläufer des Steinkreises Die britischen Wissenschafter vermuten nun, dass am Tag der Sommersonnenwende Prozessionen entlang des Cursus - vom Sonnenaufgangspunkt über das Mittag-Zentrum bis zum Sonnenuntergangspunkt - stattgefunden haben könnten. Der Steinkreis und der Cursus wurden früher "als zwei unterschiedliche Dinge wahrgenommen", so Neubauer, für den der Cursus "auf jeden Fall ein Vorläufer des Steinkreises gewesen ist". Es stelle sich nun die Frage, was an dessen Stelle dort früher war. "Wir werden aber nicht nach zwei Jahren die Lösung haben", so der Archäologe. Die Untersuchungen würden aber das Wissen über Stonehenge grundsätzlich verändern. Die Entwicklung von Methoden zur großflächigen Untersuchungen von archäologisch bedeutsamen Landschaften, ist der Forschungsfokus von Neubauer und seinen Kollegen. Neben Stonehenge analysiert das Ludwig Boltzmann Institut in Kooperation mit verschiedenen österreichischen und internationalen Partnern beispielsweise auch Ausgrabungsstätten aus der Wikingerzeit in Norwegen und Schweden. In Carnuntum konnte mit diesen Methoden zuletzt die Gladiatorenschule entdeckt werden. (APA, red)
